My Story and Career CV

‘A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song’
— Maya Angelou

It began creating characters with bears, rabbits and dolls, developing a vast world of nearly a hundred characters , acting out their many different stories with my sisters through seven years.  We called it the ‘Animal Game’ and it took over our bedrooms, with cupboards for houses, and shops, schools, even a night club made from shoe boxes, a world populated by animal families, postmen, teachers, councillors, and the game eventually covered most of the top floor of the family house.

As you might guess, our parents were tolerant if concerned at times;  then my mother was an avid reader, reading at least one novel a week. So I believe she understood. And I came to read some of her favourite writers, Iris Murdoch, Kurt Vonnegut, Somerset Maugham.

I read everything I could from everywhere ..  Ferlinghetti, Calvino, Nolan, Beckett, Ionesco, Ginsberg, Montale, Robbe Grillet ….. My first published writing was at 17 in Lines Magazine, a poem, about a reader and his shifting emotion to the news of the Mai Lai massacre.  I was thrilled to have more poems published alongside famous poets.  I wrote every day, poetry, stories and articles, with further success.  It all seemed clear, life was a nightmare, writing was a freedom.

Of course life was not a nightmare, things changed for the better. And thinking  back, life is touched by chance, sometimes for the good, yet frequently and often unforeseen, it is suddenly shocking.  What made sense before as a child playing out those characters was gone, there was an infinite number of new people and scenarios to attempt to survive, understand and write.

Paul is currently working on a number of feature film scripts and an Anglo-French documentary.
